Entry from: Ko Phi Phi Don, Thailand Entry Title: "Island Life" Entry: "Finally after a day and a half of travel, we'd arrived on Ko Phi Phi island. The overnight train was a bit different than we'd expected but not unpleasant. Instead of the European style compartments containing 4 bunk beds on one side of the train, this was a passenger train that was converted into sleeping berths for the "deluxe" second class cars. Curtains and safety belts for the upper bunks on either side of the train with luggage racks right in the middle walking aisle characterized our journey. Surpsisingly, after what was considered only a brief delay of 1 hour in Hua Hin, we were on board and sleeping like babies. No snorers either, what a blessing. Our resort was simply paradise. On an isolated picturesque bay that doubled as a prime snorkeling spot on the island, we passed a day and half snoozing on the beach, lying in hammocks, and drinking and dining under a starlit sky. Our room was sparse by luxury standards but charming nonetheless, with a working fan and electricity only during the hours of 6pm and 6am, and a cold water shower complete with a window looking out to the sea. When this trip was just an idea we each chose things we wanted to see or do. Sean chose the Blue Hole in Belize, Machu Picchu in Peru and the Galapagos Islands, while I chose sailing to Colombia from Panama and Easter Island. We only booked our flights a couple of months before our going to the Island as we wanted to be as flexible as possible. We decided to make the trip as close to our departure from Santiago as possible as that was where we would end our amazing adventure! With our flights booked and our campsite reserved the only thing we had left to do was the shopping!! Groceries are almost all imported to the island and therefore very expensive! The best advice we were given was, seeing as it was a domestic flight, to buy as much food as we could and take it with us. We planned our meals and headed out with our shopping list! Easter Island is over 2000km away from the it's neighboring inhabited center, making it one of the most isolated places in the world. This might be the reason it is sometimes refered to as the 'navel of the world.' The flight would be around 6 hours, with Lan, the only airline ...
